Flooring Types:
| Solid Flooring
One solid piece of wood from top to bottom, regardless of width or length is SOLID wood flooring. Generally boards are 18mm.There are 3 main types of solid wood flooring:
Pre-finished solid wood flooring is just that- already sanded and sealed by the manufacturer with a least four coats of ultraviolet-cured urethane resin. It offers consistent quality; quicker installation and immediate gratification, meaning you can walk on it as soon as it is laid.
Time and money saved during the installation typically offset the initial higher material cost.
Unfinished solid wood flooring must be sanded and sealed on-site. This type of flooring gives you a great opportunity for customization. Your choice of species, stain and finish all contribute to the personalization of your floor, While it does offer more colour choices, it requires extensive preparation, The sanding process can be messy and dusty; significant drying time is required after each sealing application requiring up to 5 days for completion. While the initial material cost is lower, you must remember the additional costs for sanding and sealing.. |

Engineered Wood Flooring
This type of floor consists of layered tiers of real hardwood pressed together. The real wood surface veneer (top wear layer) is available in many different designs and finishes and also available in thicknesses ranging from 3 –6mm. The overall board depth ranging from 14mm to 22mm.
Engineered wood floor construction consists of 3 to10 layers of wood (typically 5-6)
Each layer of wood is called a “ply” and they are oriented in different directions for strength, and then glued under pressure. This construction technique results in a wood floor that is more stable than a solid wood floor. Stable meaning the floor is less susceptible to shrinkage and expansion movement due to fluctuations in humidity or temperature. These floors can be placed directly over concrete. Engineered wood flooring is perfect for areas of the house where solid wood may not be suitable such as conservatories and over Under floor Heating. |
